The first member of the IMS on the Moorea Island, French Polynesia, a sister in the faith of Jesus, was baptized recently in the Pacific Ocean, the Facebook profile IMS Oceania Division announced today, on Monday, August 24, 2026. The children of the newly baptized sister are preparing to be baptized soon, the Facebook profile IMS Oceania Division added. The daily temperature on Moorea Island, French Polynesia, varied in the beginning of this week between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius which could be considered as a perfect weather for the Christian baptism.
The name of the Moorea Island, a volcanic island with an area of 134 square kilometers (52 sq mi) in French Polynesia situated 17 kilometers (11 mi) northwest of Tahiti, means 'yellow lizard' in Tahitian. Pedro Fernandes de Queirós (1563-1614), a Portuguese navigator in the service of Spain, was the first European who saw the island in 1606. The island had a population of 14,226 inhabitants, as of the 2002 census, which reached 17,718 in 2017. The Moorea island, administratively part of the municipality Mo’orea-Mai’ao, itself in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, is one of the main tourist destinations in French Polynesia, known mainly as a honeymoon destination. And last, but not least, the majority of the local population are Christians. Moʼorea's Tema’e Airport has connections to the international airport in Papeʼete, the Tahitian capital.
