Okinawa, the second-largest city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, located approximately 20 kilometers (12 mi) north of the largest one and capital city Naha, had a population of 142,752 citizens, as of October 1, 2020, and a total area of 49.00 square kilometers. The Okinawa Prefecture, Japan’s southernmost and westernmost prefecture, includes 160 islands (49 of them inhabited) in three main island groups – the Okinawa Islands, the Sakishima Islands and the Daitō Islands, which comprise a maritime zone of nearly 1,000 kilometers east to west and 400 kilometers north to south.
