Cambodia, officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, a country in Mainland Southeast Asia with an actual area of 181,035 square kilometers and a today population of approximately 17 million people, whose capital and most populous city is Phnom Penh, was founded in 802 AD, as Jayavarman the Second declared himself king, uniting the warring Khmer princes of Ghenia under the name "Kambuja". In 1863, Cambodia became a French protectorate, however, in 1953 the country declared independence from France. In 1993, the monarchy was restored with Norodom Sihanouk reinstated as King, and the first post-war election was coordinated by the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC).
